What are New Generation Portraits?
Multi Generation portraits are a way of realising that we have finally grown up! Whether you are just starting your own family, and want to include your children, parents, grandparents and maybe even great-grandparents; or maybe you are already grandparents yourselves and want to include your grown-up children and their children in your family generation portraits.
I am very soon to be a first-time grandmother, and it prompted me to dig through my family photo archives to see what generation portraits I have.
- Several pictures are of my grandmother, with me sitting on her lap.
- Some were on the beach when I was a child wearing an enormous hat with my Dad.
- Luckily there is an old faded photograph of my grandparents with my mum as a toddler smiling at the photographer.
- One of my favourites is of my Mum and Dad's wedding, with both sets of grandparents, and all my uncles and aunts standing on the steps outside a church.
They are so emotive, so precious, and luckily these memories live forever.
It can be a hassle trying to get everyone together in the same place at the same time – especially nowadays when everyone leads such busy lives. The pressures of work, the children always off to some after school activity, even some family members living miles away and only time for a quick phone call. It all adds up to time passing by so quickly that we hardly notice it. But the rewards of making an effort to get together far outweigh the problems.
So much catching up to do; seeing how young nephews and nieces have grown since you last saw them; watching the expression of pure love on grandparents' faces as they see their whole brood together. It's magical and even more so when the beauty of this family relationship can be captured in a multi-generation portrait.
Whether it's your grandmother's birthday, a special anniversary, or simply the joy of getting together, what better way to celebrate your whole family than with a three-generation or four-generation portrait, capturing the character and spirit of your whole family.
